Briefly write about the major components of Nepal’s financial market

Introduction to Nepal’s Financial Market

A financial market refers to a mechanism or system that mobilizes savings collected from savers (those with a resource surplus) toward investors (those with a resource deficit). It assists in boosting productivity by mobilizing short-term and long-term capital within the economy.

Major Components of Nepal’s Financial Market:

Money Market: A market where short-term financial instruments (with maturity periods of 1 year or less) are traded. Regulated by Nepal Rastra Bank, commercial banks, development banks, finance companies, and microfinance institutions are active in this market. Instruments such as inter-bank loans, treasury bills, and commercial papers are traded here.

Capital Market: A market for collecting and investing long-term capital (maturity period exceeding 1 year). It is regulated by the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON). It includes the primary market (IPO/FPO) and the secondary market or the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), where shares, debentures, and bonds are traded.

Foreign Exchange Market: A market where currencies of different countries are bought, sold, and exchanged. In Nepal, this market is operated by commercial banks and licensed money changers within the scope of policies and exchange rates determined by Nepal Rastra Bank.

Insurance and Non-Banking Financial Market: A sector contributing to risk transfer and the collection of long-term small savings. Regulated by the Nepal Insurance Authority, life and non-life insurance companies, along with the Citizen Investment Trust (CIT), Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), and saving and credit cooperatives, function as components of this market.

In conclusion, these components of Nepal’s financial market play a decisive role in promoting investment, mitigating risk, and maintaining macroeconomic stability through proper management of short-term and long-term resources.
